Portraits 2013-2023 is a look-back to the 10 last years of the Chinese female photographer VACCINE. A self-written year-by-year introduction opens the book, followed by 120 pages of portraits, then 64 pages of new or unpublished selected works on a textured natural paper.
Let's go back in the past of the photographer, struggling with life and survival in her early years, to a ripe personality who keep exploring under the surface of appearances without compromises, driving her through the four corners of China, and more far abroad also and even in jail...
Definitely a human being misfitting the system, a free soul, with a style impossible to label and an eye seeing and documenting the emotional mutation of the world.

I noticed her work through a gallery in Antwerp. I felt a personal resonance with her book, which is why I decided to get a collection of her works. Being Japanese and not particularly assimilated into Japanese local society, my interest in her work might differ from that of Europeans. My impression is a sense of "belonging." I appreciate the approach to the body and gender within fashion design, especially the avant-garde in London. Wounds can teach us something. I also believe that humans have a strong core, even if they don't get hurt. Her work represents parts of myself from a distant foreign land, and I don't think her work is extreme. Rather, it naturally touches human beings. It might be called the soul and there is an airy brightness to her work. Kentaro Akasaka
